Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship

OVERVIEW

Undergraduate Computer Game Design students are invited to apply for Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarships for the 2023-2024 academic year. The Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship increases the quality of students’ learning experience by assisting with the cost of attending George Mason University and by supporting opportunities for students to develop the necessary skillsets for seeking a career in the Computer Game Design industry. Undergraduate Scholars will be awarded $2,000.00 to $12,000.00 to enhance their learning experience in Computer Game Design Program at Mason.

The intention of this scholarship is to give talented students an opportunity to fully concentrate on their studies with generous donations from Tencent America so that they can explore various career opportunities in the Computer Game Design industry.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS & DEADLINE

Applicants must be declared Computer Game Design major prior to applying for this scholarship.  Continuing students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA in the major and a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA. Freshman applicants must have a minimum of 3.5 unweighted high school GPA. Awards will be granted in semester increments equal to half of the total award. Awardees are required to participate in school events, and this will be coordinated with Ms. Mary Bean, Academic Program and Office Manager, Computer Game Design Program. The Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.

All applications must include:

  1. A completed Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship Application Form. 
  2. A 2-3 pages personal essay addressing the applicant’s achievements/qualifications to be considered for The Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship.
  3. An additional 1-2 pages essay reflecting on how the Computer Game Design Program has helped shape you as a Computer Game Designer. If the applicant is a freshman, this essay can be replaced with a 1-2 pages essay addressing future plans and goals for achievement in the Computer Game Design Program.
  4. A portfolio or work samples
  5. A current transcript (.pdf from the patriot web is acceptable)
  6. A letter of support

⦁    2, 3, 4, and 5 can be put into a folder named after your last name and submitted as one compressed file via OneDrive or Google Drive. Please, provide the link to download your application packet in the application form.

The application packet should be submitted online. A letter of support should be sent to Mary Bean separately. 

CONDITIONS OF THE AWARD

Awardees should maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA in the major and a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA. Awardees are expected to participate in school events, and their participation will be supervised by Ms. Mary Bean. Awardees are required to submit a final essay reflecting how the Tencent America Merit Undergraduate Scholarship has enhanced their learning experience at the Computer Game Design Program at the end of the award term (Spring semester).  In cases in which awardees do not meet these conditions, the awardee must return the funds to the Computer Game Design Program.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection committee will be composed of faculty and/or staff representatives from Computer Game Design Program. Applicants may be contacted by the selection committee with additional questions regarding their application. Applicants who advance past the first screening will be contacted for an interview if applicable. Awardees will be announced on the website of the Computer Game Design Program.
